The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said the acting governor of Adamawa State Alhaji Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri will not contest the 2015 governorship election arguing that he is meant to complete the tenure of former governor, Murtala Nyako, who was recently impeached by the Adamawa State House of Assembly.
Fintiri was among the 14 aspirants who signed a pact last week that the next governor of the state in 2015 shall emerge from Adamawa Central without considering the fact that he hails from Adamawa North Senatorial District.
National secretary of the PDP, Professor Wale Oladipo who was secretary of the committee that brokered the agreement with the contestants yesterday insisted that the acting governor would not contest the election adding that “whoever wins now will not insist. I can assure you of that.”
“We didn’t force any aspirant to step down. I was the secretary of the committee that met with them and what happened was we pointed out that it will be morally wrong for whoever wins now to contest the 2015 election meaning that such a person will only rule the state till the expiration of original term of Murtala Nyako. And eight of them voluntarily withdrew that they would prefer to wait and contest the 2015 election. Nobody was forced. We don’t have a class captain in PDP,” he said.
“The person himself was the one who said ‘If I win, I will not contest’, so nobody is taking anything away. And in PDP, you should know that we are family and we don’t have any domineering dictator here. We all discussed, we reached agreement and we move out as a team and that is what we are going to do in Adamawa State.
“We are going to move out as a team. Of course, other parties will not be happy because they are in disarray and they inherited Nyako’s very bad record. Let them go and leave with it. It is not our problem, it is their problem. They looked for Nyako, they got Nyako. Let them learn to leave with him”, he added.
Oladipo who described the agreement as robust, solid and voluntary dispelled claims in some quarters that the party is using the said agreement to take away the constitutional rights of the acting governor to contest.
