Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Governorship Aspirant, Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has advised other aspirants of the party in Rivers State to channel their energies towards defeating the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, rather than focusing their attention on him.
Barrister Wike spoke in Abuja on Thursday in a chat with journalists after submitting his expression of interest and nominations forms to the national organizing secretary of the PDP, Alhaji Mustapha Abubakar.
The former Minister of State for Education was accompanied to the PDP National Secretariat by members of the House of Representatives from Rivers State, PDP members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Federal Commissioners, Former National and State Assembly members, former State Commissioners and top PDP Chieftains.
He noted that the same aspirants who have formed the habit of misleading the media through false statements attempted in vain to stop last week’s successful ward congresses in Rivers State. He stated that the aspirants went to court to stop the congresses but did not get judgment, attempted to burn down the secretariat and later withdrew from participating in the ward congresses.
“Politics is not played at press conferences. Politics is played at home and amongst the people. These aspirants may continue with their series of press conferences, but we shall continue to consult with the people and canvass for their support. Issuing false statements will not change the determination of the people to vote in a credible leader who will defeat the failed government in Rivers State.
“The committee that conducted the ward congresses was appointed by the PDP National Working Committee and I had no hand in that appointment. The Deputy Executive Secretary of UBEC was appointed directly by the President. I had no hand in these appointments,” he said
The PDP Rivers Governorship Aspirant wondered why the same aspirants who refused to participate in the ward congresses would turn around to challenge the process which was successfully conducted and monitored by relevant stakeholders.
Wike assured Rivers PDP members that he is determined to lead the party to victory and dislodge the APC in the state. He noted that he would subject himself to the governorship primary, which he believes that he would win.
He said: “This is a people’s movement. You can see the list of PDP leaders who nominated me and you will understand that this is a movement to rescue Rivers State from misrule and mis-governance. This is about Rivers State, not an individual”.
Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Austin Opara said that Barrister Wike is Rivers PDP strategy to defeat opposition APC in the state. He urged the other aspirants to bury the hatchet, retrace their steps and join the procession to defeat APC in Rivers State.
Receiving the expression of interest and nomination forms, Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha described Barrister Wike as a dedicated party leader in Rivers State who has supported the party in times of need to ensure the required stability in the party.
He commended the Rivers State PDP governorship aspirant for his loyalty to the party and his capacity to mobilise members of the party at all times. He wished him well in his aspiration to lead Rivers State.
