APC in Niger threatens to boycott Senatorial bye-election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State has threatened to boycott the Aug. 16 bye-election for Niger-East Senatorial District.

Spokesman for APC in the state, Mr Jonathan Vatsa, issued the threat in a statement released to newsmen in Minna on Thursday.

He said the party might boycott the election if Dr Emmanuel Onucheyo, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), was allowed to preside over the election.

He alleged that Onucheyo sent a proposal to the State Government requesting for N44.375 million to organise national inter-agency advisory committee on voter education and publicity

“APC drew the attention of the public to a proposal by the REC to the government requesting for N44.375 million in the name of organising National Inter-Agency Advisory Committee on Voter Education and Publicity.

“The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Saidu Idris, confirmed that a proposal with the same amount quoted by APC was actually brought before the government by the REC.

“The SSG said that N28.7million was eventually approved by State Executive Council in one of its meetings’’, he said.

Vatsa said the party might boycott the election if the allegation was proven to be correct.

He said that the allegation was enough for INEC to redeploy the REC in order to have a free, fair and credible election in the state.
