Lamentation on the Murder of an Otukpa priest By Michael Okwori

I am just learning of the discovery of the decaying corpse of the very first Catholic priest of Otukpa origin, Rev. Fr. John Adeyi. He was kidnapped for ransom and apparently killed by the devils even after the ransom was paid. My heart is heavy and bleeding. I remember leaving St. James Seminary, Aliade to attend his ordination in Otukpo and later joining the entire sons and daughters of Otukpa to celebrate our first priest. As a young seminarian then, I was so proud…Today Otukpa mourns the barbaric killing of a man of peace and a servant of God, very possibly by sons of Otukpa or at least Idomaland. How did we get here? We got here by celebrating crooks. We got here by not questioning the sources of the sudden wealth of our children but rather celebrating them for making it. We got here by making role models of thieves and fraudsters. We got here by arming cultists to win elections. We got here by not reporting known criminals and drug barons to the relevant authorities. Many more youths are waiting for “prominent” people to visit home so they can grab them and demand for ransom… It is the new thing. Are we going to rise up against them or wait for them to completely take over? RIP Father Adeyi.
