Supreme Court judgment: Suswam rolls out the drums

Twenty hours after the Supreme Court affirmed the election of Governor Gabriel Suswam, the Benue State Government and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, rolled out the drums to celebrate the victory of the governor.

Thousands of the supporters of the governor thronged the IBB Square in Makurdi on Saturday to celebrate the hard fought victory.

The supporters who defied the scorching heat, waited for close to three hours for the governor to arrive from Abuja where he had travelled to for the Supreme Court judgment.

The celebration attracted all the commissioners, 23 local government council chairmen, PDP party local government, PDP State and National Assembly members, women and youth groups. The groups were mobilized by caretaker council chairmen who transported them to the venue.

On Friday after the judgment, security agencies stepped up security surveillance in the state to check any form of protests by opposition members.

The celebration was held under very tight security.

Governor Gabriel Suswam speaking at the celebration declared that he will not be distracted by the opposition in his desire to deliver the democracy dividends to the Benue people. The governor said that the decision of the Supreme Court confirms the mandate the Benue people freely gave him. He urged well meaning opposition members to join him to develop the state.
