Sacked Oba: Ondo community appoints regent

THE sacking of the traditional ruler of Igburowo, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, Oba Akinfesola Adewola, weekend, by the youths of the town took a new turn yesterday as a new regent has been appointed to act in his stead.

Also, the police in the state said the Oba is at present under its custody to avoid a clash by the youths and his supporters.

The people of the community appointed the Lisa of the town, who is also the second-in-command to the monarch, Chief Festus Ogunsesin, as the regent and warned the removed Oba not to return to the town.

It would be recalled that the youths on Sunday invaded the palace of the monarch and forcefully ejected him over allegation of high handedness.

The youths had as early as 6.30 a.m. marched to his palace and forced the monarch out to the entrance of the town to express their grievances against his alleged high handedness.

He was said to have been forced to trek several kilometres and was led to another community while the palace was locked.

The action of the youth was said to have followed a protest letter sent to the government and signed by 21 members of the town representing various interest groups over alleged atrocities that had brought the town into disrepute.

It was gathered that the regent is expected to stand in until a new Oba is appointed
the traditional rites to appoint a new Oba for the town had commenced.

The quick intervention of the Police from the Ore division according to reports prevented the situation from degenerating into a violent clash as supporters of Oba rose in his defence.

As at the time of filling in this report the palace was still under lock and key as the market in the town had been moved from its former location to another, a development said to be part of rites performed following the demise of any Oba in the town.

However, normal farming and commercial activities have however resumed in the town as the people went about their businesses.

Speaking after the meeting the new Regent said all the chiefs that were either suspended or removed by the former monarch had been recalled to enable peace reign in the town.
