The Rivers State Governor, Barr. Nyesom Wike has reiterated his commitment to continue the development of sports, medical practice and other worthy endeavors within the State.
Speaking during the 5th Doctors’ Game opening Ceremony at the Sharks Stadium in Port Harcourt today, Governor Wike said, encouraging and hosting activities and development would increase the number of good ambassadors who can always testify of the hospitable and peaceful nature of Rivers State.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Tammy Danagogo, Governor Wike stated that, the theme of the 2020 Doctors Games, ‘Healthy Doctor, Healthier World’ was very instructive since it is only a healthy doctor that can truly threat a patient.
He however, urged the doctors to not keep the message of sports as a tool for good health to themselves alone but spread the benefit of sports to the larger society.
“As you doctors need sports to stay healthy, they also need sports to stay healthy. Sports is a veritable tool for boosting health, bringing unity and general human empowerment.
“I am delighted that Doctor who are champions of good health are spear heading the way through sports to teach our society by example, he said.
Earlier the President Nigerian Medical Association, Dr Francis Faduyile, thanked the Rivers State Government for hosting the game.
He noted that, Governor Wikes’ development of the Real Madrid Academy positions him as a visionary leader whose development strides has not gone unnoticed particularly in infrastructural development.
He said, the Games Which first started in Eket, Akwa Ibom State in 2014 served as a strategic response to the spine-chilling increase in the number of deaths and morbidities amongst doctors and dentist.
“As part of our national response to this critical challenge and disaster and in recognition of the popular cliche: ‘Physician heal thyself’ the NigerianMedical Association commenced implementation of some strategies aimed at promoting the health and wellbeing of Nigerian Doctors’ he said.
The Chairman of Rivers State Nigeria Medical Association, Dr Obelebra Adeniji and Chairman of National NMA Sports Committee, Dr Uche Ojinmah respectively gave goodwill messages.
Also represented in the game were Minister of Labour and Employment, Minister of Health, Head of the Federal Civil Service.
