The story of the exceptional performance of Paul Kagame, the President of Rwanda is known to all. He is appreciated for rebuilding a country ravaged by war.
But, Paul Kagame fell into the African Leadership Trap. Rig the process and continue indefinitely. He worked for the amendment of the Rwandan Constitution and naturally acquired another term.
The Tragedy of the African Leader is the Childish assumption that the country cannot make progress without him. He conveniently forgets that every human being has an appointment with death. If you die, the country continues to live. So, it is unwise to be a sit-tight leader.
Whatever gains that would be made by Paul Kagame would be obliterated when he leaves office, either willingly or forcefully. We have seen many of such cases across the continent.
African leaders find it difficult to develop a leadership structure that would help build the future. This is the reason why criminals, charlatans, uneducated fools gatecrash into leadership positions.
In Nigeria, we have seen a deliberate destruction of the Electoral System by the APC Federal Government for through the use of the Armed Forces to subvert the will of the people. The leadership recruitment process has been truncated and rendered useless. Certificates are now worthless.
The truth is that Rwanda is no different from Nigeria or any other African country facing leadership crisis.
