The Concerned Citizens of Abua/Odual LGA for the Protection of Our Environment (CCAO) have called President Muhammadu Buhari to take urgent steps to stop the Niger Delta Petroleum Resources Limited ( NDPR) from further destroying the environment of Abua/Odual through illegal oil mining activities that have destroyed the sources of livelihood of the people.
In an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, Kelvin O. Mopho ESQ , (Coordinator, CCAO) and Samuel A. Moro (Secretary CCAO), they accused NDPRL of failing in their corporate social responsibility to the people of Abua/Odual Local Government Area and also illegally drilling 27 Oil Wells.
Their open letter is titled: “Open Letter to President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) Against
NIGER DELTA PETROLEUM RESOURCES LIMITED(NDPRL) over massive oil/chemical spill, lack of corporate social responsibility, adherence to local content laws, the change of oil well head name from OGB. OML 54 to OTR. OML 54 and the failure to obey resolutions of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petition/Complaint based on the findings to NOSDRA on A PETITION PRESENTED BY KELVIN O. MOPHO ESQ THE COORDINATOR OF THE CONCERNED CITIZENS OF ABUA/ODUAL LGA OF RIVERS STATE ON 30TH AUGUST, 2018 BEFORE THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVE COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC COMPLIANT AND PETITION”
They wrote: “NDPRL has connived with some security men in various uniforms, to forcefully enter and drill the remaining 27 oil wells in our local Government Area by next month October, 2019, without obeying the Resolutions of the National Assembly or even ,meeting with the necessary Agencies and Ministries as required by law. They have made our farms inaccessible and our Rivers as well, our mothers and fathers can’t go to farm for the fear of the unknown because of heavily strange military presence.
“We therefore, use this medium to call on your Excellency the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the United Nation Environmental Programme (UNEP), All well-meaning Environmental activist, All Security Agencies, Area to come to our aid as our environment is getting worse for over 17years now without any remedy but drilling, refining and distribution of oil and gas going on uninterrupted.
“In this era of zero tolerance to corruption and its related vices, we believe that you will use your good office to come to our aid as we are a peaceful people who have suffered this great injustice for almost two decades without a single disruption of the operations NDPRL”.
They stated that rather engage in positive corporate social responsibility projects, NDPRL has resorted to using security agencies to intimidate the host communities of Abua/Odual LGA in Rivers State.
They accused the oil firm of refusing to respect the resolution of the House of Representatives and all other efforts by relevant government agencies aimed at ensuring that they act within established laws .
They called on President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that the Director of NODSRA is given the required support to implement the measures that will resolve all issues raised.
They said: “After the meeting with the Director General of NOSDRA Mr. Musa O. Iris and other parties except NDPRL, we are very much convinced that our doubts have been reduced on the readiness of the director to carry out the resolution of the National seeing him as a man who has a listening ear. Therefore, we are calling on your Excellency to give him the necessary support and push to carry out the resolutions as NDPRL has started taking equipments to site for the drilling of the remaining 27 Oil Wells located in Abua/Odual LGA”.
