Council chairmen in Abia State have been urged to pay council workers in the state, May and June salaries owed them or face disciplinary action.
This was the position of the Committee on Local Government Biometric System after meeting with council chairmen of the 17 local government areas of the state gave them an ultimatum of 7 days to effect the payment.
As a result of the salary arrears members of the National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, protested by embarking on a one-day warning strike.
In their defence, the council chairmen claimed that their inability to pay was as a result of the shortfall of the revenue accruing to them.
The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Cosmos Ndukwe, Chief of Staff to the Abia State governor.
