A CRY FOR JUSTICE

-BY ABRAHAM ABADO LUBEM:

On wednesday 18th Dec. 2013 at about 3:00pm, I went to GTB Otukpo road makurdi to make some withdrawal, while i was approaching the ATM machine located by the old building of the bank,a mobile police officer attached to the Bank (later to be identified as corporal Ajoh Tiseh) prevented four (4) young men who were in short knickers from leaving the Bank,i walked away and queued up then it was my turn and I withdrew (N15,000) only from GTB account number 0118676790, when I was making my way out of the bank the young men who were prevented from leaving the bank at this juncture became restive, apparently thinking they have been in shorts was their offence,i approached the mobile police officer (corporal Ajoh Tiseh) and politely pleaded with him that if wearing of shorts is no longer allowed to bank,he should kindly pardon them today and warn them not to do so next time. I was at this point ordered by the corporal Ajoh Tiseh to join them. The Sales Rep of the University press plc makurdi who is a friend drove into the bank at the time for transaction on sighting me, came over and inquired what was the matter but was told that he could only be answered at the police station. We were later moved to “B” Division Police in makurdi,at the station we were kept for close to an hour behind the counter without any statement taken from us. While we were still waiting at the “B” Division police station, two police officers in mufti (one of them later to be identified as Mr Swande) told us to raise N10.000 each if we want to be left out of a case that there are several cases on ground that we could be linked to and we will spend more money and time especially when it is transferred to the state headquarters, at about 4:00pm while we were at the station, the men of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) drove into the station with 3 men who were alleged to have attempted to rob GTB. The DPO ordered their immediate transfer to police headquarters shortly after their transfer was ordered we were also moved to the police headquarters on arrival,we were moved to the SARS office at the police headquarters where we were severely tortured through out that evening till night and were later locked up at the state CID cell by 10:00pm . On thursday 19th Dec. 2013 we were again brought out at about 6:30am and laid on the floor, where we were again tortured, our statement were later taken, where i explained that i was at the Bank for a withdrawal of N15.000 using my ATM card and bank transaction alert was on my phone to show for evidence. I further stated that my plea with (corporal Ajoh Tiseh) was the only reason why i was arrested, yet i was not let go. We were later that evening about 5:00pm paraded before journalist at the state police headquarters as armed robbers/criminals terrorising the state, most of the journalist present who knew my hard work and impeccable record where alarmed because they can to a large extent attest to my qualities. We were later returned to the cell, where we spent a second night. I was granted bail with the sum of N15.000 and was requested to report back at the police headquarters on the 3rd of January. My lawyers (Lawyers Alert) led by Barr Rommy Mom Esq has already written to the commissioner of police and we await the commissioner’s response.
