32-yr-old remanded over drug deal

LAGOS — Justice Musa Kurya of a Federal High Court, Lagos, Monday, ordered the remand in prison of a 32-year-old man charged with illicit drug deal.

The accused, Abel Asaka, was charged by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, on one-count of drug trafficking. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Counsel to the accused, Mr John Okaka, informed the court of a bail application on behalf of the accused, and prayed the court to move in terms of the bail.

The prosecutor, Mrs Funmilayo Ajagun, however, opposed the application, adding that she had filed a counter affidavit to that effect.

She, therefore, urged the court to remand the accused, and fix a date for trial.
Justice Kurya in a short ruling, ordered the accused to be remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons, and adjourned the case to July 10 for trial.

The prosecutor had told the court that the accused was arrested on May 23, at Gbaji check point, along the Lagos/Badagry Expressway, on his way from Benin Republic.

She said during the routine stop and check by custom officers, about 57.6 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa was recovered from the accused, who was suspected to be dealing in the narcotic.

According to the prosecutor, the accused was thereafter handed over to the NDLEA for prosecution.

The offence is said to contravene the provisions of sections 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, 2004 and attracts a penalty of life imprisonment.
