Elders and opinion leaders of Rivers South-East senatorial district in Rivers State have alleged plot by some prominent politicians in the state to scheme them out from producing a successor to Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi come 2015.
Chairman of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District Elders’ Forum, Dr. Martins Nwogu, who disclosed this in a chat with newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday, accused politicians who are opposed to the Amaechi-led administration of being the brains behind the plot.
Nwogu stated that the people of the senatorial district had in the past, overwhelmingly supported the two other senatorial districts in the state, Rivers West and Rivers East, at different times to produce the governor of the state.
He said; “Closely watched recent political events, developments, and posturing in our state appear to culminate in a stratagem and plot to scheme out Rivers South-East from the position of governor in 2015.
“It must be borne in mind that the people of Rivers South East had in the past, overwhelmingly supported other senatorial districts at different times to produce the governor.
It will be politically inconsiderate and tantamount to injustice in the power equation of our dear state if we are denied the opportunity to produce the next governor of Rivers State.”
Nwogu who was Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports, disclosed that the senatorial district remained the only senatorial zone in the state that has not produced any governor since the state was created by the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon in May, 1967.
