On Wednesday, at about 10am two police inspectors attached to the Ogun State Command were killed in an auto crash along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
An eye witness who disclosed to Scan News said that the policemen died immediately on the spot of the accident while one of the two suspects they had gone to arrest died later in the hospital. The second suspect only sustained serious injuries.
Scan News gathered that ten other passengers travelling in the urvan bus also sustained various degrees of injuries in the fatal accident which claimed the lives of the policemen identified as inspectors Thomas Olorunjuwon, Ojo Johnbull and the unidentified suspect.
However, the two police officers were killed when the Toyota Hilux van marked Lagos DF 413 AAA they were travelling in on their way from Sango where they had gone to arrest the two criminal suspects collided with a blue DAF stationary truck with registration number Lagos XU 502 JJJ in Iyani Onigbedu, Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area.
Another 16-passenger yellow Nissan Urvan bus marked Lagos XM 440 BDG also rammed into the police Hilux van from behind.
However, a survivor of the accident who claimed to have narrowly escaped being injured explained that the driver of the urvan bus must have dozed off momentarily.
According to the survivor, there was no sign of an impending accident until we drove past the Ewekoro Cement Plant heading towards Abeokuta, when suddenly the driver, dark complexioned drove menacingly. Before we could notice what was happening, he had rammed into a stationary truck with some passengers crying for help.
While confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi said that only the two policemen who were on official assignment were killed during the auto crash.
Adejobi, an assistant superintendent of police while condoling with the families of the fallen officers said that the deceased policemen would be given befitting burial.
Also, the Federal Road Safety Commission Unit Commander for Itori, Fatai Bakare confirmed that one other person in addition to the two police officers was killed in the accident while ten others sustained injuries.
Bakare said that the accident involving two vehicles and an a truck must have been caused by dangerous by dangerous driving.
