President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday fully identified with the newly inaugurated Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, executive committee in Rivers State led by Bro Felix Amaechi Obuah, declaring that the PDP will no longer tolerate indiscipline, disloyalty and rascality of members within the party.
He added that restructuring of the party is very critical to the party.
The President hosted the party structure loyal to the Minister of State for Education, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike to a breakfast meeting that discussed several political and developmental issues after Rivers State.
Jonathan declared that the party would no longer allow politicians who remain in the PDP while fully hobnobbing with other political parties.
He said stated that the PDP is working towards ensuring that that all members respect the ideals of the party for its overall success. He said that Rivers State is too critical to be allowed to derail politically.
Vice President Namadi Sambo thanked the PDP in Rivers State for identifying with the President and his administration.
Rivers State PDP Chairman, Felix Amaechi Obuah stated that the members of the PDP were in the State House to declared that total support and loyalty to the President. He dissociated the party and her i-members from the anti-party activities of Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
He said despite the moves by the PDP to ensure that the governor retraces his steps; he has remained bent on sponsoring opposition parties in Rivers State. He said that Governor Amaechi was behind the sponsorship of ACN in Rivers State.
“We are pained and our heart bleeds today that the main champion of opposition in the country against Mr President, and indeed, the Federal Government of Nigeria is our own son, Gov. Rotimi Amaechi.
“We do not know what has come over the young man. Is it that he wants to destabilise the PDP before his eventual movement to his new party, having been handed over the ACN/APC structure in Rivers?
“Unfortunately, he has repeatedly rebuffed every effort by us and well-meaning Nigerians to make him show remorse and respect for the office of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,’’ he said.
Obuah apologised to the president and his wife, Dame Patience, and pledged unalloyed loyalty of the party to the administration.
“Mr President Sir, we sincerely apologise to you and the First Lady on this sad situation.
“We appeal that as the saying goes, ‘you do not visit the sin of the father on the son’ and implore Your Excellency, to remember us in prayers.
“To demonstrate that Rivers people are not with Gov. Amaechi in this hostile attitude against Mr President, and our great party, we shall continue to support his suspension from the PDP by the National Working Committee until he retraces his steps from engaging in anti-party activities.
“As a party, Mr President, we in Rivers assure you that we will continue to support you,
“As our son-in-law, we guarantee that you can go home and sleep with your two eyes closed, believing that at all times, we will massively support and stand with you, come rain, come shine,’’ he said.
Acting Leader of the PDP in Rivers State, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike assured the President that the political space in the state was under firm control of loyal party members. He stated that sponsored propaganda by opposition newspapers will not change the facts.
In an interview outside the hall, Wike said: â€œYou have seen the team that visited President Jonathan today from Rivers State PDP. Tomorrow, you will read in The Nation and Sun that a faction visited the President. All journalists who have witnessed the event are living witnesses, but tomorrow, you will read different thingsâ€.
Former Rivers State Governor, Peter Odili in a remark said that the people of Rivers State will follow the President all the way.
The breakfast meeting was attended by the two Ministers from Rivers State, the entire PDP exco, members of the State and National Assembly from the State, former National Assembly members and former ministers. Also in attendance were former commissioners, council chairmen and PDP women leaders from Rivers State.
