Group slams Obasanjo over letter to Jonathan

LAGOS—A human rights group, Youth and Conflict Resolution Initiative, YCRI, has described as hypocritical, former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s letter to President Goodluck Jonathan in which the former accused the latter of destroying Nigeria through his actions and inactions.

The group in a statement signed by its Director of International Relations, Comrade Efemena Agadama said it was against the norms of society and friendship for anyone to publicise a private letter to a president of a nation, even as it noted that the tone of Obasanjo’s letter lacked any iota of respect for the office of the president.

While accepting the fact that it was constitutional to criticise, oppose or discredit a government, YCRI maintained that it is unconstitutional to play tribes against one another or to falsify facts in an attempt to denigrate the office of the president.

The statement reads in part: “It’s a tragedy of shameful acceptance that the said letter was written by a former president whose government entrenched lawlessness as constitutional order.

“The writer, Obasanjo, should be reminded, if he has forgotten, that it was his government that created all the security problems plaguing Nigeria today. Boko Haram was founded by Mohammed Yusuf,  during Obasanjo’s first tenure but he failed to nip it to the bud.”
