The Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has formally inaugurated a forum for the Chairmen Governing Council of all Education agencies in Nigeria to tackle the challenge of incessant strike and other problems affecting the education sector.
Inaugurating the forum in Abuja, the Minister said the platform would create an opportunity for the chairmen to deliberate on various aspects of the nation’s education system and also address the problem of poor quality of education leading to unemployable graduates in the society.
“we realised that the boards of the agencies all have a common goal which is to focus on ensuring progress and development in the sector”
“More importantly the government expect that their focus should be on ensuring that knowledge is imparted on students thereby making sure that issues of incessant strike in the sector is permanently put on hold”
Malam Shekarau who said the forum would be of great advantage to the Nigeria education system stressed that the forum will discuss the problems and chart a way forward on issues hindering the growth of sector.
He added that the platform which is to hold periodic meeting has prominent and vast experienced individuals as its members.
The Minister re-stated that the Present administration will ensure that teachers are well remunerated and well respected in the Nigerian society.
He urged Nigerians to join hands with the Federal government to restore the dignity and respect of the teaching profession.
“We should all be reminded that a globally accepted fact is that no nation can grow and develop higher than the quality of its education system and the quality of its teachers”
Quality of Education
Speaking on behalf of the forum members, a former Governor of Anambra State who is also the chairman of the forum, Dr Chuwkuemeka Ezeife said that the platform would help save the monotonic decline in quality of education in the country.
Dr Ezeife said the platform for the Chairmen of Governing board of all education agencies will protect the interest of the teachers, students and the government.
He also said that the committee will ensure that Nigeria leads the Africa continent in producing high quality graduates and improved standard of education.
“Moreso the consensus is that we have unemployment problem so we’ll tackle the root of the problem through adequate deliberation ” Dr Ezeife stated
“ the problem is manpower training, and Nigeria cannot afford not to have good and solid education system as the giant of Africa”
“ the committee was constituted to ensure that we have no strike system in the nations education system” he added.
