The Danko/Wasagu Local Government Council in Kebbi will recruit 110 vigilantes to check criminal activities in the area, Alhaji Rabiu Riba, the Chairman of the council, has said.
The chairman told a stakeholders meeting on security challenges in the area on Wednesday in Riba that the council would recruit 10 vigilante members in each of the 11 electoral wards of the area.
He said that the aim was to ensure effective and efficient community policing.
“We would not relent in provision of the necessary logistical support to the vigilance group for positive results in the fight against crimes,” he added.
In a remark, the state Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ishaku Daudu, who is an indigene of the area, said the state government would support the crusade as part of its efforts to “make this state a crime-free area”.
“This meeting is a follow-up to the directive given by the state Governor, Alhaji Sa’idu Dakingari, that security meetings should be held across the state.”
He said the Peace Corps of Nigeria, Commercial Motorcycles Operators’ Association and Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers would be incorporated into the crusade in order to achieve the desired results.
The commissioner called on the people of the area to be watchful and report any suspicious character around them to the appropriate authority for necessary action.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that major stakeholders at the meeting included the police, military and para military personnel in the area.
