In a bid to check the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, crisis for degenerating further, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former military President Ibrahim Babangida met with leaders of the two factions of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, in Abuja on Friday.
Obasanjo himself is believed by the Jonathan group as one of the brains encouraging the dissendent governors to work against Jonathan. Jonathan it was learnt told Obasanjo pointedly to call his associates in the governors forum to order.
The meeting lasted hours as GovernorJang led his faction, while Amaechi also led his faction. Obasanjo and the party elders met with the groups separately, before meeting with them collectively.
Also in attendance were former PDP National Chairmen, Barnabas Gemade, Ahmadu Ali and Board of Trustees chairman, Tony Anenih.
The former president stated that the elders were working towards stopping the PDP from sliding further.
Scan-News gathered that the Amaechi led group insisted at the meeting that Jonathan must not contest a second term, while they also urged the elders to prevail on President Jonathan to withdraw the EFCC from continuing with the investigation of corruption petitions against them.
Like always, they insisted that Bamanga Tukur must be removed as PDP chairman, claiming that Tukur is now a stooge to President Jonathan and would work for the realization of Jonathan’s second term which they are opposed to.
However, the Jang group maintained that the President is entitled to a second term and any move to remove the party chairman should follow laid down constitutional procedures.
Obasanjo himself is a key participant in the conflict, having nominated Olagunsoye Oyinlola to serve as secretary of the faction. Obasanjo is also fronting Lamido for the Presidential ticket of the PDP, with Amaechi promised the ticket.
Officials of the PDP told Scan-News that Obasanjo is further aggrieved because Jonathan blocked Ahmadu Ali from emerging as Board of Trustees chairman.
The resolution of the crisis may not be in sight as it is certain that President Jonathan will seek a second term. Therefore, removing Bamanga Tukur as PDP chairman, if that succeeds may not be the ultimate solution.
