NUT President calls for National Merit Award for Teachers

President of Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, Comrade Michael Olukoya has appealed to the Federal Government to set of an annual merit award for teachers akin to the National Merit Award scheme.

He said that the award is key to the encouragement of teachers to perform better.

The NUT President also called on the National Assembly to jettison the idea of ceding the payment of primary school teachers to local authorities.

He spoke at the World Teachers Day celebrations being attended b6 President Jonathan. The President is represented by VP Namadi Sambo.

President Goodluck Jonathan represented by Namadi Sambo called on teachers to be more determined to serve as agents of change and development.
