Only three political parties have fielded candidates for the vacant
Aba-South state constituency seat in the by-election scheduled for
Saturday, August 16, 2014.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National
Electoral Commission, Abia State, Professor Jacob Jatau, who
disclosed this at a news conference, on Thursday, in Umuahia,
identified the parties as the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, the
All Progressives Grand Alliance and the All Progressives Congress.
The Aba-South state constituency seat became vacant following the
death of PDP leader, Chief Nwogu Iheasimuo, popularly known as
Onye Keke, in March.
According to INEC, the PDP is fielding the widow of the late
lawmaker, Mrs. Nkemdirim Iheasimuo, while APGA fields Chimaobi
Akwara, and Smart Onuabuchi runs on the platform of the APC.
The INEC boss expressed the confidence that the commission
would conduct a credible poll, adding that non-sensitive electoral
materials for the exercise had arrived the state.
He said 700 INEC officials, including 635 National Youth Service
Corps members had been mobilised for the by-election, adding that
no fewer than five RECs would be in Abia to help supervise the
