Mayor of Port Harcourt city Hon Victor Ihunwo JP, has berated the factional chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers state, Hon Ojukaye Flag Amachree for violently disrupting the bye-election into the Port Harcourt state constituency III seat in the Rivers state house of Assembly, conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.
The Mayor condemned in its totality the activities of the factional chairman who led armed thugs to disrupt and cart away electoral materials with the aide of officers of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police.
He commended the people of Port Harcourt state constituency III for exercising so much restrain, and their display of maturity in the face of open intimidation by the factional Apc chairman and his hoodlums, in collaboration with SARS.
He warned that the people of Port Harcourt will no longer tolerate the disruption of any democratic exercise in the city by anti democratic forces.
Hon Ojukaye Flag Amachree is a Rivers indigene, and is very free to associate with anyone he so desires in the city of Port Harcourt.A situation where he will leave his hometown of Buguma and come to Port Harcourt to violently disrupt elections will no longer be condoled by our people as no individual has the monopoly for violence.
There is sufficient evidence to show that Hon Amachree was directly involved in the disruption of last saturday’s bye-election,hence the need to let the world know that the people of Port Harcourt are not cowards and will never allow his nefarious activities to repeat itself again.
The Apc knows it cannot win in a free and fair contest in Nigeria, hence they must always resort to violence to be able to manipulate the electoral process, but i urge them to take their undemocratic tendencies out of the city of Port Harcourt .
Finally the Mayor commends Inec for acting swiftly by suspending the elections yesterday, and advise them to properly investigate all that transpired during the bye-election and prosecute all offenders in line with the relevant electoral laws of the land.
