The member representing Ogu/Bolo Constituency and the Chief Whip of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Evans Bipi, has debunked claims by elements of the opposition that the State Government plans to use the neighbourhood watch to arm youths in the state.
Speaking with newsmen while reacting to criticisms of the Neighbourhood Watch Safety Corps Law by the opposition, at the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex on Tuesday, Bipi said that the Neighbourhood Watch Safety Corps is aimed at supporting security agencies with information for them to fight crime effectively in the state.
He said that the Neighbourhood Watch Safety Corps Law is inline with the extant laws and constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.
He said: “We are not the first to pass such bill, Lagos State also passed similar bill, the aim of the law is to assist the security agencies with intelligence and information in other to curb crime in the society.
“The Neighbourhood Watch is not to witch hunt anybody, it is to complement the efforts of security agencies to apprehend those who may cause the breakdown of law and other in the various localities.”
Bipi, who is also the Chairman, House Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions, commended Governor Wike for his massive infrastructural development in the state, noting that his unprecedented performance would speak for him during the general elections in 2019. He however, advised politicians in the opposition to criticize constructively in other to contribute to the stability and development of the State.
