The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, on Thursday advised politicians to engage in responsible politics ahead of the 2015 and beyond.
Abubakar made the call when he received Governor Rotimi Ameachi of Rivers in his palace.
He said that the utterances by some politicians in the country were inimical to the peace and unity of the country, adding that Nigeria commanded global respect because of her size, population and unity.
‘’We must be watchful of what we say; we must have responsible politics by 2015 and beyond for the common good of this country.
“We realise that people can exercise their right of expression, but we must watch what they say if we want this country to remain peaceful.”
The sultan said that Ameachi’s visit to Sokoto State would strengthen the bond of unity between the state and Rivers, adding that it would also afford him the opportunity to assess the developmental strides made in the state.
Abubakar said that the state government had given more attention to rural development and agriculture in order to diversify its economy.
He recalled that agriculture was once the main stay of the nation’s country and urged leaders at all levels not to rely solely on oil.
In his remarks, Ameachi applauded the Sultan for working assiduously towards ensuring peace and unity in the country and urged Nigerians to ensure peaceful and credible elections in 2015.
Speaking earlier, Gov. Aliyu Wamakko told the Sultan that Ameachi’s visit to the state was part of the peer review mechanism introduced by the Nigerian Governors Forum to enable them learn from each other.
He said that the initiative was informed by the governors’ commitment to serve their respective people diligently.
Wamakko said that the forum also resolved to promote understanding and unity across the country
