Store keeper docked over alleged N1.5m theft

Lagos— A 21-year- old store keeper, Ebuka Matthew Ugboma and one other, Onwuatuelo Obinna, 28, have been arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate’s court, sitting in Apapa, for allegedly stealing N1.5 million belonging to TonyZen Nigeria Ltd.

The suspects, who are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and obtaining, preferred against them by the police, were docked before Magistrate A Shonubi.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant O. Festus, told the court that the defendants and three others at large, committed the offence sometime in July 2013, at Aspanda market, Trade fair complex in Lagos.

He said that Ugboma, being the store keeper of TonyZen Nigeria Ltd, stole 98 cartons of Mobil Oil XHP, worth N999,600, belonging to the company.

Festus said that in the same month, Obinna stole 54 cartons of Mobil Oil XHP, valued N560, 800, property of the same company.

The prosecutor also alleged that Obinna received 54 cartons of Mobil Oil XHP from Ugboma, which he knew was stolen property from the company.

The prosecutor said the offence committed is contrary to section 278 and punishable under sections 409, 285 (1) and 326 (1) of the criminal code cap 11 vol 44 law of Lagos state of Nigeria 2011.

However, when the charge was read to the defendants, they pleaded not guilty.

The magistrate granted them bail in the sum of N200,000 each with one surety each in like sum and adjourned the case to September 16, 2013.
