Colleagues and friends,
After the euphoria of the NUJ FCT election on December 1, it is about time to get to work.
Let me begin by thanking the Almighty, Who in His grace, gives power to whom He so desires. This victory is to all journalists in the FCT, and to our friends on the social media who canvassed for votes despite not being members. I owe you all a debt of gratitude.
In the past few days, I have called my colleague and friend, the main challenger, Rafat Idris Salami, to not only thank her for a robust engagement through the process, but to solicit her cooperation and those of her numerous supporters in getting the NUJ FCT Council working again.
In the next week, we intend to meet with all strategic partners – FCTA authorities, editors/bureau chiefs, security chiefs, past council officials, chapel officials, beats associations, etc- in order to build synergy, and reap from the goodwill.
I must admit that during the electioneering process, tempers flared sometimes to acrimonious level, but this I believe ended after the votes’ count.
The NUJ is one entity and we should see each other as ‘one’ irrespective of our different persuasions.
Like I promised while seeking for your votes, this executive will be open and run an inclusive administration; amenable to new ideas and suggestions and will take the best possible decisions in the interest of our members.
On the matter of fake journalists and quacks, we are committed to the fight and are ready to step on toes to stem the cancer that seems to hold center stage in the FCT.
Part of our meetings with the different security chiefs will be on how they can commit personnel to the taskforce we will be constituting.
It is instructive to note that the situation is dire in terms of what is on ground, and in this regard, we will be reaching out to some of you our partners and friends to assist us in this early stages so we can have a firm footing going forward.
We are not unmindful of the task ahead, but we are persuaded that with your support and prayers, the challenges are not insurmountable.
We remain grateful to members of TeamOgbeche, and to all of you who stepped onto the plate to make this possible. Together with you, #FRESHSTART is possible.
Thank you and God bless.
Chairman of Council
