The Rivers State Government has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to expedite action to revamp the Ports in the South South and also complete the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt International Airport.
The State Chief Executive Nyesom Ezenwo Wike , stated this during a courtesy visit by the National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Thursday, 9th August , 2018.
Represented by his Deputy, Dr. (Mrs) Ipalibo Harry Banigo, Governor Wike said, on assumption of office in 2015, his administration quickly rehabilitated the Industry Road leading to the Port Harcourt Port in a bid to stimulate activities at the Port but regretted that it has not yielded the desired result.
“After we had done the Industry Road we thought that the Port Harcourt Port would be functional maximally but we have not seen that yet. Not only Port Harcourt Port but all the Ports in the South South Zone need to be revamped which obviously would improve on the ease of doing business in the Zone and also decongest the Lagos Ports,” the Governor stressed.
Governor Wike also urged the Federal Government to hasten the completion of the ongoing rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt International Airport which has been going on longer than necessity.
He said the promises he made to the Chamber of Commerce in 2015 had been fulfilled, like the harmonization of taxes to end double taxation, issuance of Certificate of Occupancy, provision of massive infrastructure all aimed at making Rivers State an investors’ paradise.
Governor Wike commended the National President of NACCIMA, Iyalode Alaba Lawson, for her support for women, noting that she personally came to inaugurate the NACCIMA Business Women’s Group in the State last year. He also noted that our women are undergoing training, forming cooperatives, making themselves useful in their homes and communities.
Speaking, the National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Iyalode Alaba Lawson who described NACCIMA as the voice of the organized Private Sector in Nigeria expressed delight that the Public Private Partnership was working in Rivers State because of the political will and commitment of Governor Wike.
Iyalode Alaba Lawson who is the 19th President of NACCIMA and the first female National President expressed gratitude to the Rivers State Government for allocating a plot of land to the Chamber of Commerce in a strategic position.
It would be recalled that NACCIMA was in the State to hold its 3rd Quarter National Council Meeting.
