The Federal Government has declared that it will ensure that the necessary steps were taken for families of the victims of the ill-fated Dana Plane, get the exact remains of their loved ones.
Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu made the declaration when he visited the mortuary at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital where the corpses were deposited. The Minister stated that pathologists from different health facilities in the country have been directed to join their colleagues in LASUTH to conclude the identification of the corpses.
The Minister noted that the preservation of the corpses, especially those than can be recognized were properly done by the pathologists. He appealed to the bereaved families to bear with the authorities as they work towards releasing the corpses to them.
Chukwu fielded questions from the aggrieved bereaved families at the mortuary, offering government assurances and commitment.
Also speaking, an official of LASUTH, Professor John Obafunwa stated that 40 autopsies have been performed on the corpses deposited at the mortuary. He said that the hospital authorities and pathologists will ensure that they carry out the relevant tests for the accurate bodies to be released to families.
He urged the families to be patient as it will be more traumatic in future if they discovered that bodies released to them turn out not to be those of their loved ones.
Lagos State Health Commissioner, Jide Idris assured the bereaved families that the Lagos State government will remove the pressure on them by the death of their loved ones.
The Health Minister also visited the site of the crash where he inspected the procedure for the fumigation of the environment.
