Cattle owner guns down two robbers

Two suspected armed robbers were gunned down by an alleged cow owner at Du Village in Jos South Local Government of Plateau State in the midnight of Tuesday, January 8. It was gathered that the man who shot and killed two of the armed robbers owns many cows in the vicinity.
According to some sources, on noticing the arrival of the bandits, the cow owners, at a vantage position, allegedly opened fire to save his life, his family and the cows.
A man simply called Yusuf who lives around where the incident happened said, “When he opened fire, two of the armed robbers were found dead on the ground at the scene of shooting, but no cow was stolen. One dramatic thing happen. It was discovered that the corpses of the two people are natives.
“But when the news filtered into the village, the youths who are mostly Berom mobilized themselves to ward off the invaders thinking that it was another midnight attack by terrorists who had been attacking them in the recent past. In the process, the Soldiers of the Special Task Force (STF) rushed to the scene and arrested some of the youths who trooped to the scene to help situation.”
The source added that others managed to escape being arrested and they went to block the roads yesterday morning making going to Du or coming out of it impossible but were dispersed by the soldiers.
Before the midnight attack, it was alleged that some news letters were circulated by some herdsmen who claimed that they were coming to invade Du over incessant stealing of their cows.
Addressing journalists yesterday at the STF headquarters in Jos, its Spokesman, Captain Salisu Ibrahim Mustapha, said that on January 8, at about 10.20pm “Special Task Force personnel received a distress call through one of the recently launched emergency telephone numbers to the general public about sporadic gunshots heard around Du, Shenabe and Bisichi Villages in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
“Our troops combed the general areas and arrested nine suspects in four different cars. The vehicles include Vento with registration number AH 454 BLD (Plateau), Vectra AA87 MLF (Katsina), Mercedes Benz EC 210 LND (Lagos) and Honda AG 718 (Plateau).”
According to Mustapha, items recovered from the suspects include one AK 47 rifle, one FN rifle, one Sub-Machine Gun (SMG), one locally made short revolver, one locally made long revolver, bayonet, knife, two rounds of 9mm ammunition. Others include fire handsets, Plateau State Polytechnic Student identification card, Plateau State Universal Basic Education ID Card, Voters card and wraps of Indian Hemp among others.
He further pointed out that “preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects acquired the weapons from various sources within Plateau State. The suspects claimed that they exchanged gunfire with some gunmen who came to rustle cows in Du village. It was in the process of going to ambush the gunmen that they were arrested by our troops. The suspects and items recovered are in STF’s custody undergoing investigation.”
Mustapha encouraged the law-abiding citizens of the state to continue to provide the STF with useful information that could lead to apprehension of evil doers as security is a collective responsibility.
He warned that “any individual or group of persons who are bent on fomenting trouble with the sole aim of truncating the peace in the state have made themselves enemies of peace and would be made to face the full wrath of the law.”
Answering questions from journalists, Mustapha said that the arrested suspects said that they too got distress calls from their community about some gunmen coming to steal cows. “But the issue is that nobody is allowed to laws into their hands. They are not supposed to be in possession of weapons. So, investigation is still going on into the matters.”
He denied any knowledge of two people who were found dead at the scene, adding that if there was any casualty “it was not at the time the suspects were arrested. These suspects are the ones involved in the shooting. No any other people that came. These are the same people. But whether they are natives or outsiders, I cannot say. Investigation will reveal that.”
Last week, a police officer, Corporal Umaru Ahmadu, was shot dead in a gun duel with bandits in Mangu local government council.
