Residents of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, are now apprehensive following the reports of a cholera outbreak in two communities in the state.
Severe cases of the epidemic had been reported in Abeokuta South and Abeokuta North local government areas of the state .
Although the state government confirmed that only one person had died, sources at the State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta, claimed that no fewer than five people had lost their lives to the epidemic since its outbreak a week ago .
Some residents of Ijaiye area of Abeokuta, attributed the cholera outbreak to a burst septic tank which spilled its content into a major water pipe in the area and contaminated it. But in a swift reaction, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Olaokun Soyinka, allayed the fears of residents, saying that the government had stepped up measures to stop the re-ocurrence of cholera outbreak in the affected communities.
