Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has called on Media practitioners to always cross check their news before circulation, saying that false reportage can lead to crisis.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the management of Daar Communications Plc on Tuesday, Governor Wike regretted that Channels Television almost threw Rivers State into crisis when it generated a false report about the National Industrial Court in Yenagoa.
He said even though nothing of the sort happened, Channels Television reported that the National Industrial Court in Yenagoa had reinstated council chairmen whose elections were nullified by a Federal High Court.
Governor Wike noted that the event was part of a grand design to throw the State into confusion for the Federal Government to declare a State of Emergency in the state.
He said : “ The Channels Television falsehood on the nonexistent judgment of the National Industrial Court in Yenagoa allegedly reinstating the council chairmen whose elections were nullified by the Federal High Court could have thrown the state into crisis and led to chaos.
“We believe that some people were planning a state of emergency. At the end of the day they were the persons who got embarrassed”.
The governor commended the management and staff of Daar Communications Plc for running a television station, the African Independent Television, AIT, that promotes professionalism and fair reportage.
He said that the when the other television stations shut out his campaign organisation, it was only the AIT that provided a platform for him to have the needed visibility.
Governor Wike directed the Secretary to the State Government to immediately commence the processing of the certificate of occupancy for the land acquired by Daar Communications Plc in 2003.
Earlier, Chairman of Daar Communications Plc, Chief Raymond Dokpesi (jnr) commended Governor Wike for hitting the ground running as the governor of Rivers State.
He appealed to the Governor to help the organisation in getting the certificate of occupancy for the land it acquired in 2003. He said that Daar Communications Plc will continue to partner with the Rivers State Government for developmental purposes.
