First it was an arm struggle against the Nigerian State by the Niger-Delta Militants where oil platforms and installations were targeted; expatriates and top Nigerian staff were kidnapped for ransome until amnesty were given to the “freedom fighters”. That action has “forever” set the region backwards as the place remains volatile decade after. Light arms proliferation; porous waterways; pipeline vandalism; oil theft and many other vices.
Secondly, the ragtag Boko Haram from radicalism to using bow and arrow to detonating IEDs on targets to grooming suicide bombers. Today, the Northeastern region is a “no-go” area. That once beautiful region has been set 50yrs backwards. A Commission has been set up to rebuild the place with billions of dollars that would have been used to tackle underdevelopment in the country.
Thirdly, the IPOB emerged. Though peaceful in their conducts but having a devastating and destabilizing effect to the continual unity of Nigeria. With the way the “Python Dance” exercise is taking place, if care is not taken, the most peaceful region in Nigeria would be set ablaze.
Note that until we “re-configure” (political/economic restructuring) of the country, this kinda agitations or far worse would continually plague the Nigerian nation.
Former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan saw and hearkened to yearnings and aspirations of the Nigerian people and set up a “National Conference” which would have put to rest at least, the many agitations from the different regions, leaders converged and brainstormed. Resolutions were reached and a working document presented to the FG. Then came election and Jonathan lost. Buhari who succeeded Jonathan and his party who refused to be part of the conference, have deliberately refused to attend to that document thereby allowing it to gather dust in the shelf.
Those against the current struggle of the IPOB should know that until Nigeria is reconfigured where powers would be devolved; where there shall be fiscal federalism; where the people shall have confidence in the political system; the nation would remain a country hanging on the precipice!
