There is no gainsaying that leaders are not born, but made. This assertion is buttressed by the political and developmental trajectory of an uncommon transformer, phenomenal leader called Chief (Barr.) N. E. Wike, CON, the Executive Governor of Rivers State.
The peoples’ governor from his days as local government chairman of Obio/Akpor local government area has traversed the patches and potholes of leadership to arrive where he is, even though we must asseverate that it is not yet uhuru, as the challenges are still forcefully present, especially in the political realm. Rivers State is blessed today with focused leadership. It takes uncommon bravado for any leader to achieve a lot amidst glaring and dispiriting challenges. Governor Wike’s story is one sating with political bad weather, as we all know he inherited a state that had been so emasculated by his predecessor. Ours was a state full of abandoned projects, degraded internally generated revenue (IGR), massive unemployment, sold state properties at giveaway prices for selfish political gains, sleaze, duplicated traditional stools, rancour and acrimony caused by undue interference of government in communal matters, lax in security etc. In sum, one can say that Gov. Wike inherited a Rivers State that was in a state of flux, with the destructive centrifugal forces having the upper hand. How the dark and gloomy Rivers State of 2014/2015 became the State of Light today, barely two years after, is entirely the handwork of Wike’s political and administrative magic wand. The New River’s Vision is the blueprint that has kept this unrivalled transformer focused.
Interestingly, this uncommon feat was realized amidst slim federal allocation and near-zero IGR! How the governor pulled that off is bewildering. For Gov. Wike, winning the guber election was a progress to a position of immense burden. His political sojourn was revolutionary, not merry, as the job to be done was enormous. Identifying the hydra-headed problems bedeviling Rivers State necessitated finding the seemingly evasive solution. The problem answered to the “What?” part, the solution, which answered to the “How?”, posed a serious challenge, but the phenomenal steward was ready for it.
Meka Mr project governor and the sun news paper best performing governor of the year.
