Heipang Beer parlour attack death toll rises to 10

The death toll of Monday’s night attack on S.K. Beer Parlour by unknown gunmen at Heipang village in Barkin Ladi local government council of Plateau State where eight people were killed on the spot has now risen to 10 while six people who sustained various degrees of injuries are now receiving treatment at the Plateau State Specialist Hospital, Jos.

According to a statement issued yesterday and distributed to journalists by the Spokesman of the Special Task Force (STF) Operation Safe Haven, Captain Salisu Ibrahim Mustapha, on the fateful day by 8.30pm, the unknown gunmen stormed and attacked the said beer parlour by opening fire indiscriminately on customers killing eight people on the spot while two people died later.

Mustapha said, “The gunmen opened fire indiscriminately on customers and killing eight on the spot while two others died later as a result of the gunshot wounds they sustained. In protest to the killings, some members of the community barricaded the highway preventing commuters from using the road.”

He, however, stated that the STF troops deployed along the highway dispersed them, saying that the situation had been brought under control. He added that STF is closely monitoring the situation to avert any ugly incident on commuters plying the road.

The statement further stated that frantic and concerted efforts by all the security agencies are being put in place to apprehend those behind the dastardly act.

It appealed to the people of the state to always allow security agencies to take control of security situations when such incident occurs. It also warned the general public not to take the laws into their hands as any act of lawlessness will not be tolerated by the security agencies.

Mustapha enjoined all law-abiding to go about their lawful businesses. He used the medium to reiterate the need for the public to continue to provide STF with useful information as the security outfit assures them of their utmost confidentiality.

But the people there, especially Mr. ThankGod Sule, pointed fingers at the soldiers as the actors. “We saw soldiers in their Hilux Van and they started shooting. We saw them. I was lucky to have escaped the attack because I was there also drinking when they came. What saved me was that I was a little removed from the main joint.”

Mustapha reacted to the grave accusations saying, “That is a lie. They are just being mischievous. It does not make sense at all. Sometimes people just talk anyhow. How can we do something like that by taking arms against people we are to protect? Haba! Haba! It is against logical reasoning. The incident took place in the night where there was no light. The attackers operated for about two minutes. How can somebody identify who and who carried out the attack?”
