When Nigeria’s anti-graft war gets U.S. support
In the spirits of several bilateral agreements between Nigeria and the United States of America (USA) particularly the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), signed by the two countries on September 13, 1989, the American government has renewed its commitment to assisting Nigeria in the fight against corruption.
The commitment was made at the launch of a website dedicated to exposing activities of corrupt government officials and create awareness among Nigerians which the American government facilitated through collaboration with a group of religious leaders and Non-Governmental Organisations.
It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari was in Washington D.C barely two months after his inauguration in 2015 where he sought and got the commitment of the American government in the fight against official corruption, which is one of cardinal points of his new administration.
During the visit, the U.S agreed to assist Nigeria to recover all identified proceeds of graft within its territory and train Nigerian judicial officials and prosecutors to sharpen their skills in handling and prosecution of corrupt cases.
Then Vice-President Joe Biden whom Buhari also met during the visit gave assurance of America’s goodwill in rebuilding the Nigerian economy and also pledged to tackle corruption and weak institutions that he identified as the bane of development in Nigeria.
Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, had summed up the engagement with the Americans during which Buhari also met with the U.S Attorney-General, Loretta Lynch thus, “There will be collaboration. Each of the two countries will receive legal assistance from the other on criminal matters and that should cover the recovery of ill-gotten wealth.”
Before Buhari, who had established a stern anti-corruption reputation since his days as military dictator emerged as a civilian president, Louisiana congressman, William Jefferson had been indicted for being involved in a bribing scandal that involved high-ranking Nigerian officials to secure business deals for some American concerns.
While the Americans did the needful by having the congressman investigated, his alleged accomplices in Nigeria are believed to be still walking the corridors of power, a development that has shown that the U.S was, more than the Nigerian government, committed to the eradication of corruption in the country.
Ekiti 2018: There shall be no Imposition – Fayose
Monday, 17th July, 2017
Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose has said the most popular candidate amongst PDP aspirants in the 2018 race to Oke Ayoba governor’s office will emerge as his party’s candidate assuring Ekiti people that his government will impose no one on the populace.
The governor made this assertion in Ikere Ekiti while reacting to questions from journalists after he personally supervised the distribution of food items and stipend(for ingredients) in continuation of his Stomach Infrastructure Programme, Monday evening.
“No two individuals are the same but God knows why he empower individuals to achieve their goals, whoever takes over after me, it is between him and God. Ours is to ensure that we are led to carefully support whoever will deliver on his words.
“We are not going to impose anyone on the people, we will ensure our candidate is the collective choice of the majority. The first problem in Nigeria is internal democracy where leaders don’t give people the right to choose. We are going to ensure it is the person they want that is elected at the primary.
“Lack of synergy between the people and the candidate being elected is the reason for crises in the past, once there is unification of love and ideas, the people’s expectations will not be in vain”, Fayose said.
Affirming that his government will continue to do its best to alleviate poverty in the face of economic downturn presently being experienced nationwide, Governor Fayose said, “there is need to assist as much as we can, we must give our people hope, we must make them comfortable within the ambit of availability in our Stomach Infrastructure Programme.
“No matter the level of infrastructural development you embark upon, the people still want to benefit personally and directly. Some of them are not asking for contracts, some are only asking for recognition and that is exactly what we are doing”.
With Governor Ayodele Fayose at the venue where the Stomach Infrastructure Train offloaded its contents was Personal Assistant to Ekiti State Governor on General Administration and Stomach Infrastructure, Sunshine Anifowose.
Trump’s Son Met Russian Lawyer Over Adoption, Magnitsky – White House
The meeting between President Donald Trump’s son and Russian nationals at Trump Tower during the 2016 campaign focused on adoption and the Magnitsky Act, a White House spokesman said on Monday.
“There was nothing, as far as we know, that would lead anyone to believe that there was anything except for discussion on adoption and Magnitsky Act,” White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters.
Despite the statement, Donald Trump Jr. has acknowledged that he met in New York with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya after he was told she might have damaging information about his father’s rival, Democrat Hillary Clinton.
And according to emails released by Trump Jr. last week, he eagerly agreed to meet Veselnitskaya, who he was told was a Russian government lawyer. Veselnitskaya has said she is a private lawyer and denies having Kremlin ties.
The meeting appears to be the most tangible evidence of a connection between Trump’s election campaign and Russia, a subject that has prompted investigations by congressional committees and a federal special counsel.
Moscow has denied any interference and the president and Trump Jr. have denied any collusion.
Buhari Has Failed, No Hope, Senator Kanti Bello, Says APC Lied Against Goodluck.Jonathan, PDP
Let me be frank with you, in Katsina, where I come from, people are finding it difficult to eat three times a day, not even two times. Things are difficult. The economy is so bad, whatever you are buying, and inflation has tripled. A bag of maize that used to sell at N4,000 when Buhari took over is now selling at N16,000 and at that price, people aren’t getting it to buy.
I am a practical person. Do we look at all these and continue to praise the government? No! Yes, we praise the government when it comes to Boko Haram, it has reduced its activities in the North-East and there is some stability in parts of the North with regards to the bombings—it has reduced drastically or virtually gone.
Yes, there is something good there but then after it has gone, there is kidnapping. People are being kidnapped and murdered. We aren’t safe, you cannot even travel from here to Kaduna without feeling that something can happen to you. You see, we have got rid of one evil and another has come in.
So, all we are saying is that Buhari and his APC government hasn’t solved our problems. I am part of that government and I apologise to the masses that our economic policy is a failure. We have scored 50 per cent on security but certainly the economic policy of the government has failed the masses, because I am part of the masses. People aren’t living well in this country. That’s the truth.
Up till now, our factories, our industries are dead, our people are poorer. Look at our economy, it has been so bad; the exchange rate, they say it has been improving. Improving? From N160 to a dollar, now it is N368 to a dollar. Is that an improvement? Two years ago, it was N160 to the dollar. Is that something to be proud of? It reached almost N500.
Senator Kanti Bello is a former Senate Majority Whip, who represented Katsina North Senatorial District on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before joining the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), one of the legacy parties that formed the APC.
