The report on social media earlier today alleging that some students of Benue State University, BSU who were on a peaceful march to the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi were killed by thugs was not only false but again exposed the barbaric smear campaign by members of the opposition against the Ortom administration.
We wish to state in unambiguous terms that no student of the state university was killed during the march which they embarked upon to sue for speedy resolution of the issues between the Benue State Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, BSU chapter which have resulted in the ongoing strike by the university’s unions.
While condemning in strong terms, the altercation between the students and some youths who reportedly tried to disrupt the march, we wish to state that the students later arrived at the Benue Peoples House where Governor Samuel Ortom personally received them and they confirmed that none of their members was killed or injured during the incident.
President of the BSU Students Union, Comrade Samuel Donga and Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, Bashir Makama, testified that no student was harmed.
As Governor Ortom assured the students when they visited him, the present administration has zero tolerance for thuggery and all other crimes as shown in the recent signing of the prohibition of kidnapping and cultism law.
Governor Ortom is concerned about the unfortunate strike by BSU staff unions and appeals to the unions to consider the effect of the industrial action and also shift ground in the interest of the students and parents.
The Governor restates his commitment to the transformation of education at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
