Ekiti University Students Union Protest Over Elections

Students of the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti trooped out in the early hours of Monday to protest the alleged manipulation of the student’s union government election, conducted last Thursday by the management of the institution.

The students barricaded the entrance of the institution, preventing vehicular movement into the school, after which they marched to the office of the Dean, Students Affairs Department, Professor Williams Adebayo.

Some of the students who spoke with Channels TV’s correspondent alleged that the outcome of the election did not go down well with the management, hence the alleged manipulation.

Furthermore, the students explained that the election took place on Thursday, but the Professor Williams Adebayo-led electoral body failed to announce the winner of the poll 72 hours after the election.

“Our election held over 72 hours yet the electoral body has not announced the winner, because of their selfish interest on the choice of candidate. Why would they have interest over who govern us.”

On his part, the Dean, Professor Adebayo who spoke in a telephone interview with Channels TV’s correspondent explained that the election was inconclusive.

Adebayo advised the students to be calm as the electoral body would not manipulate the result as was being speculated.

“I cannot conduct election mar with irregularities. After the election was conducted their agents went away, they did not wait for the result, so who are we going to announce the result to. Tell me? So, the election is inconclusive,” he stated.

Meanwhile the university management has constituted a committee to investigate the alleged violation of the regulations guiding the conduct of the 2017 Students’ Union election, held on Thursday August 3, 2017.
