Benue State University, Makurdi today held her 26th Matriculation Ceremony amidst pomp and pageantry during which 5,770 students were inducted into various undergraduate programmes offered by the University for the 2017/2018 Academic Session.
Addressing the fresh students, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Msugh Moses Kembe welcomed them into the University and congratulated them for realising their ambition of becoming undergraduates and charged them to work hard to attain academic excellence.
Professor Kembe disclosed that at the ceremony 5,770 out of the 28,359 candidates who sat for the last Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination (UTME) as well as Direct Entry candidates that applied to study at one of the most sought after Universities in Nigeria were matriculated into the Faculties of Arts, Education, Environmental Sciences, Law, Management Sciences, Science, Social Sciences and College of Health Sciences.
The Vice-Chancellor informed them that the Matriculation Oath which they subscribed to was a covenant between them and the University. He urged them to abide by the spirit of the Oath thereby focusing attention on their studies and negating all negative social vices that would be detrimental to their stay in the University such as examination malpractice/misconduct, cultism, improper dressing, drug abuse, homo-sexualism, lesbianism, alcoholism, prostitution, romantic engagements between students and staff among others.
He implored the fresh students to imbibe the culture of patience and dialogue as a means of resolving disputes in modern societies. He admonished them to avoid unwarranted and ill-motivated protests, shunning all forms of violence and securing the University property especially hostels and lecture halls from vanadalization.
The Vice-Chancellor assured that Management on its part would “provide a conducive environment for learning. “The University has the best quality of academic staff that are comparable anywhere in the world and are ever ready to deliver their very best. We are committed to ensuring international standards for teaching, research and learning and therefore, have put in place standard facilities including an expanded, improved and functional ICT infrastructure that will make your studies here worthwhile and the environment conducive for effective learning,” he said.
Professor Kembe acknowledged the sustained support of the Benue State Government to the University. He enumerated funding and expansion of infrastructure as the Challenges confronting the institution. He appreciated His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Benue State and Visitor to the University, Samuel Ortom for his immense investment and interest in the University as well as other well meaning Nigerians who are contributing their quota to the growth and development of the University.
He concluded by appealing to parents and other public spirited individuals to assist the University with funds, provision of classrooms, lecture theatres, offices and hostel accommodation to enhance teaching, learning and research.
The Ag. Registrar, Mrs. Catherine Terlumun Bur administered the Matriculation Oath on the new students.
Principal Officers, Deans, Directors, Head of Departments, Coordinators, Staff and Students witnessed the matriculation ceremony.
